My Best Moments of 2024: A Year of Incredible Experiences
As 2024 draws to a close its nice to look back with the knowledge that I’ve had the privilege of exploring some of the most beautiful and culturally rich destinations in Spain and Portugal. From breathtaking landscapes to unforgettable meals, here are the highlights of my year.
One of the most memorable experiences of 2024 took place in the stunning Douro Valley, where I had the pleasure of visiting Quinta do Vesúvio, one of the region’s most iconic wineries. After enjoying a private lunch featuring delicious local dishes paired with exceptional wines, we took a tour of the winery including its historic lagares—stone troughs once used for crushing grapes. The tranquility of the place, coupled with the rich history and incredible vistas, made this a truly unforgettable moment.
Madeira has always been a dream destination for me, and this year, we returned with a couple of things lasting long in the memory. We took a morning hike in the mountains along the levada (water channels) paths. The trail was a feast for the senses, with lush vegetation, dramatic cliffs, and cascading waterfalls along the way. Then there was the visit to Fajã dos Padres, a remote winery located close to a beach accessible only by cable car. The journey itself was an adventure, taking a cable car down to the winery that feels like it’s suspended between the mountains and the sea. After tasting some of the island’s unique wines and a seafood lunch by the water’s edge, we took a speed boat back to Funchal. The sense of serenity and the natural beauty of Madeira leaves an indelible mark on the soul.
This year also brought a culinary highlight in the form of a private lunch at the Palácio de Bacalhôa, a grand estate that dates back to the 15th century. The palace, steeped in history and charm, was the perfect setting for a memorable meal. As we dined in the elegant surroundings, we were treated to the finest Portuguese cuisine paired with exquisite wines from the estate’s own vineyards. It was an afternoon of indulgence, where history, art, and gastronomy came together in the most delightful way. The breathtaking views of the surrounding gardens and the wines’ perfect pairings made it a true highlight of my year.
Another unforgettable experience was the pintxos tour with an Irish group hosted by our dear friend Eli in the old town of San Sebastián. San Sebastián, known for its culinary prowess, is a haven for food lovers, and Eli’s insider knowledge always makes the tour even more special. We meandered through the cobbled streets, hopping from one pintxos bar to another, tasting a variety of food that celebrated the region’s rich flavours. From fresh seafood to savoury meats and decadent desserts, each stop offered something new and exciting. The joy of exploring San Sebastián’s vibrant food scene with great company made this one of the best moments of my year.
No journey would have been complete without the wonderful Mario, the best bus driver ever. Mario has been a part of many adventures this year, bringing a sense of warmth and reliability to every trip. His knowledge of the roads, his cheerful personality, and his ability to make every journey feel like a shared experience truly sets him apart.
Looking back on 2024, it’s great to know that we all in Iberian Wine Tours have the privilege of sharing new destinations, enjoying incredible food and wine, and building lasting memories that will stay for years to come. I’m already looking forward to the adventures that 2025 will bring.
